چکیده

The separation of slow nuclear and fast electronic polarization in problems related to electron mobility in polarizable media was considered by Pekar 70 years ago. Within dielectric continuum models, this separation leads to the Pekar factor in the free energy of solvation by the nuclear degrees of freedom. The main qualitative prediction of Pekar's perspective is a significant, by about a factor of two, drop of the nuclear solvation free energy compared to the total (electronic plus nuclear) free energy of solvation. The Pekar factor enters the solvent reorganization energy of electron transfer reactions and is a significant mechanistic parameter accounting for the solvent effect on electron transfer. Here, we study the separation of the fast and slow polarization modes in polar molecular liquids (polarizable dipolar liquids and polarizable water force fields) without relying on the continuum approximation. We derive the nonlocal free energy functional and use atomistic numerical simulations to obtain nonlocal, reciprocal space electronic and nuclear susceptibilities. A consistent transition to the continuum limit is introduced by extrapolating the results of finite-size numerical simulation to zero wavevector. The continuum nuclear susceptibility extracted from the simulations is numerically close to the Pekar factor. However, we derive a new functionality involving the static and high-frequency dielectric constants. The main distinction of our approach from the traditional theories is found in the solvation free energy due to the nuclear polarization: the anticipated significant drop of its magnitude with increasing liquid polarizability does not occur. The reorganization energy of electron transfer is either nearly constant with increasing the solvent polarizability and the corresponding high-frequency dielectric constant (polarizable dipolar liquids) or actually noticeably increases (polarizable force fields of water).

Dipole solvation in dielectrics.

This paper presents an exact solution for the free energy of linear solvation of a dipolar solute in an arbitrary dielectric material with a microscopic spectrum of polarization fluctuations. The solution is given in terms of wave vector-dependent longitudinal and transverse structure factors of the polarization fluctuations in the pure dielectric. Good agreement with computer simulations of di...

Carbon related defects in irradiated silicon revisited

Electronic structure calculations employing hybrid functionals are used to gain insight into the interaction of carbon (C) atoms, oxygen (O) interstitials, and self-interstitials in silicon (Si). We calculate the formation energies of the C related defects Ci(SiI), CiOi, CiCs, and CiOi(SiI) with respect to the Fermi energy for all possible charge states. The Ci(SiI)(2+) state dominates in almos...

Multiple Environment Single System Quantum Mechanical/Molecular Mechanical (MESS-QM/MM) Calculations. 1. Estimation of Polarization Energies

In combined quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) free energy calculations, it is often advantageous to have a frozen geometry for the quantum mechanical (QM) region. For such multiple-environment single-system (MESS) cases, two schemes are proposed here for estimating the polarization energy: the first scheme, termed MESS-E, involves a Roothaan step extrapolation of the self-consiste...

Polar Solvent Structure in the Debye-Hückel Theory of Strong Electrolytes

A general formula is derived for the potential energy of an ion in an ionic solution using all assumptions of the Debye-Hiickel theory except the assumption of constant permittivity. For the solvent the spatial correlation of polarization fluctuations is taken into account. The potential energy of an ion in it's ionic atmosphere is calculated for different models of the spatial correlation of p...

The Antiferromagnetic Band Structure of La 2 Cuo 4 Revisited

Using the Becke-3-LYP functional, we have performed band structure calculations on the high temperature superconductor parent compound, La2CuO4. Under the restricted spin formalism (ρ↑ = ρ↓), the R-B3LYP band structure agrees well with the standard LDA band structure. It is metallic with a single Cu x − y/O pσ band crossing the Fermi level. Under the unrestricted spin formalism (ρ↑ 6= ρ↓), the ...
